Metro Fire Conducting Range Management Vegetation Burn on May 30, 2018

Mather, CA – The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, as part of a collaborative effort with the Sacramento County Regional Parks Department and the Center for Natural Lands Management, will conduct a 100 acre range management burn at the Mather Wetlands on May 30, 2018 commencing at 10:00 am. The Mather Wetlands is located near the intersection of Kiefer Boulevard and Zinfandel Drive in Sacramento County southeast of the Mather Airport.

This range management burn has been permitted and approved through the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District and the Sacramento Agricultural Commissioner’s Office, pending satisfactory atmospheric and fire weather conditions. While all efforts to reduce smoke efforts will be undertaken, people in the immediate area may notice smoke during the activity.

The Center for Natural Lands Management works on behalf of the Sacramento County Regional Parks Department to ensure the long range health of the Mather Preserve and together with Metro Fire will apply fire to the lands to eliminate noxious vegetation and promote the re-growth of native plant species. Meanwhile, Metro Fire personnel will conduct vegetation and wildfire training preparing for local incidents within the County and statewide.

This activity is part of the Sacramento County Regional Parks Department countywide 2018 Fire Fuel Reduction Plan which will see manual fuel removal, creation of fuel breaks and fire roads, grazing by goats and sheep, and fire application to various lands by Metro Fire and the Sacramento Fire Department in an effort to reduce out of control wildfires in Sacramento County.

Personnel will be available on site at tomorrow’s range management burn for media requests. Please call Metro Fire’s on call PIO at (916) 859-4589 to if you intend to attend and for a specific meeting location and time.
