Penryn, CA – The Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center will provide training to nearly fifty local first responders, including personnel from Metro Fire’s Heavy Rescue Task Force, to increase proficiency and skills in rescuing large animals. Their goal is to promote interagency coordination between local fire agencies, veterinarians, and Placer and El Dorado County Animal Shelters on the approach and management to achieve successful and professional large animal rescues.

The training on December 7, 2017 will be the first in a series of trainings at the medical center. Beginning at 9 am a classroom session will be combined with a lab setting where first responders will be exposed to and practice hands on techniques.

In the afternoon hours several simulated scenarios are planned from 2 pm until 5 pm including a horse trailer accident and rescue of an animal in a steep canyon such as the Auburn or American River Canyons. A realistic horse mannequin will be used in these simulations to provide realistic training conditions.

You are invited by the Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center’s Dr. Cheryl Ellis to attend tomorrow’s training showcasing the center’s efforts to ensure the health, safety, and to effect rescues of large animals in our region in partnership with first responder resources. Personnel from the Medical Center and Metro Fire will be available for comment on their experiences at this training to describe the necessity for and benefit it provides to the members of our community. Metro Fire is an all risk emergency response agency providing services to portions of both Placer and Sacramento Counties encompassing 358 square miles.

If you would like to attend or request further information, please feel free to contact me at any time at (916) 859-4589. The Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center is located at 2973 Penryn Road, Penryn, CA 95663.
