SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA – The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District (Metro Fire) wants the entire Sacramento Region to have a safe and happy holiday season and winter. As more people decorate their homes and cook more meals combined with the need for increased home heating the winter time sees an overall increase in structure fires. Nationally, 455 cooking fires occur daily. On Thanksgiving Day the number of home cooking fires jumps by nearly four times the daily average.

The period between November through March accounts for more than half of all residential structure fires. Half of all fires caused by heating appliances occur from December through February and the peak months for electrical fires extends through March. Most fire deaths occur between midnight and 6 am.

Many of these fires and deaths are preventable with the right information. Thus, we invite the community to review the following for safety this winter and holiday season:

On behalf of the Community Relations Division at Metro Fire, we thank each of you for your assistance throughout 2017 in helping us keep Sacramento safe and informed, especially as we enter this time of year.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving,

The Metro Fire PIO’s and Community Risk – Specialists
