North Highlands Hotel Fire Ruled Arson – Sac Sheriff Assists With Evacuations

North Highlands, CA – Just prior to 10:00 am on Saturday, November 19, 2017 a fire, now ruled as Arson, occurred at the Courtyard Inn (a hotel in North Highlands). A first alarm commercial response by Metro Fire was initiated with assistance from the Sacramento Fire Department (SFD) and ultimately upgraded to a second alarm response after confirmation of the fire conditions upon arrival by fire units. The initial arriving engine was able to make a fast attack on the fire limiting damage to the unit of origin. An additional three units received water damage as a result of the firefighting efforts.

The hotel room of origin was not booked at the time of the fire and signs of forced entry were noted. Based on this and other evidence located at the scene a Metro Fire Arson Investigator was able to rule the cause of the fire as Arson. Anyone with further information is requested to contact the Metro Fire Arson Tip Line at (916) 859-3775 with any information they may have related to this fire.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District would also like to highlight the actions of several personnel from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department (SSD) who were in the area on patrol and immediately responded to the scene. These Deputies were able to evacuate hotel occupants, including some who had mobility impairments, from hotel rooms adjacent to the room of origin before fire units arrived. Because of the actions these Deputies took members of the public staying at the hotel were prevented from becoming injured or harmed by the fire while Metro Fire and SFD units arriving on scene were able to immediately focus on extinguishing the fire. Metro Fire would like to thank the SSD for their selfless actions and Teamwork in our missions of public safety.

In all, over 50 fire personnel plus others from the SSD responded to this incident prior to it being brought under control. No injuries to civilians or fire personnel were reported. Damage estimates are still under evaluation. Metro Fire would like to remind the community to immediately evacuate at the first sign of fire.
