Mather, CA – National Fire Prevention Week began October 8 and The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District (Metro Fire) looks forward to helping make the Sacramento Region safer. Through partnerships and sharing information from the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the National Fire Protection Association, Metro Fire will promote awareness and education throughout its District.

To make sure our community receive this message, the UL FSRI provided Metro Fire funding to place a decal with this message on every front line engines and trucks. With forty four apparatus responding to incidents 24/7, this message will certainly be seen.

The NFPA message for Fire Prevention Week 2017 is “Every Second Counts, Plan Two Ways Out.” Metro Fire believes this message aligns with that of the UL FSRI, as limiting fire growth and spread and reducing the levels of harmful gasses through door control allows an occupant of a building that is on fire more time to escape. The NFPA message is the theme for the children’s contest described below.

In participating with five other fire agencies (Sacramento Fire, Cosumnes Fire, Folsom Fire, and West Sac Fire), three injury and burn prevention foundations (Shriners, Safe Kids, and Fire Fighters Burn Institute), and two sponsoring groups (Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522 and Pizza Guys) Metro Fire wants students with its boundaries to enter the 2017 Fire Prevention Contest, available to pre-k through sixth graders in Sacramento County. Students who complete one or both of the following activities will be entered for a chance to win a pizza party for their class with firefighters (sponsored by Pizza Guys). Kids who draw what the theme means to them using an 8.5 x 11 white piece of paper and colored pencils, markers, or crayons (no paint, printed photos, or computer generated graphics) or who create a home escape plan with their family may enter this contest.

We urge you to visit https://closeyourdoor.org/ and contact Metro Fire’s Community Relations Division at (916) 859-4589 for more information. Additionally, Metro Fire is available to provide in studio, live, and recorded sound and demonstrations with advance scheduling to ensure this information reaches our community members and visitors.

The community should follow Metro Fire on Facebook, Twitter (@metrofirepio), and Instagram (@metro_fire_sacramento) where we will continue to release informational graphics and videos demonstrating how “Close Before You Doze” increases your chance of surviving a fire and how to create an evacuation plan all week.
