Task Force Confiscates Illegal Fireworks with Counterfeit State Fire Marshal Seal

Sacramento County, CA - An anonymous tip led investigators to a man selling illegal fireworks out of his residence this morning. The fireworks were all confiscated and the seller cited by members of the Fireworks Task Force from Metro Fire and Sacramento County Sheriff.

Unique about today’s confiscated fireworks was the presence of a counterfeit State Fire Marshall Seal on the packages. Though it looks similar to the Safe and Sane Seal on legal fireworks, these fireworks were actually illegal. So how should members of the public ensure they are purchasing legal fireworks? Fireworks should only be purchased from legitimate fireworks booths in Sacramento County. Legitimate booths will be selling fireworks manufactured by either TNT or Phantom, and every package will bear the Safe and Sane Seal of the State Fire Marshal. Do not purchase any fireworks online; sellers frequently use Craigslist, eBay and other online venues for illegal fireworks.

In 2015, Metro’s Fire Investigation Unit seized approximately 2,500 pounds of illegal fireworks, responded to 13 fires caused by illegal fireworks, and investigated four firework-related injuries. Already this year, illegal fireworks have caused significant injuries to one local child.

We need your help to stop the sale and use of illegal fireworks. Anyone with information that will help the Task Force stop the use and sale of illegal fireworks is asked to call our Anonymous Tipline at (916) 859-3775 or send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots.
