Baby Chicks Perish in Orangevale Garage Fire

Sacramento County, CA – Just after 3:00 p.m. today, Metro Fire crews were dispatched to a home on the 6200 block of Green Top Way in Orangevale for a report of heavy smoke from a garage. The first arriving engine reported a working garage fire and immediately initiated fire attack. Crews from four fire engines, two trucks, and one medic worked quickly to extinguish the fire, containing it to the garage while protecting the living quarters.

This aggressive fire attack completely spared the living quarters from any damage, so the residents will not be displaced from their home. Damage is estimated at $25,000, with the value saved estimated at $250,000. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. The fire was determined to have started with a heat lamp warming baby chicks in the garage. Unfortunately, six chicks perished in the fire.

Today’s fire tragically demonstrates how heat lamps can start a fire if knocked over or when placed too close to anything combustible. Make sure to secure heat lamps so they cannot be knocked over, and always have a smoke alarm in rooms where heat lamps are in use.

Anyone with information regarding this fire is asked to call the Metro Fire Anonymous Tipline at 916-859-3775. For more information, check out, and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
