Wind-driven Fire Threatens Many Homes, Destroys One

Elverta, CA – Responding to Browning Street and Locust Road, Metro Fire crews arrived just before 1:00 PM to a rapidly moving, wind-driven fire, threatening 20-30 homes.  The fire began in Placer County and quickly crossed into Sacramento County. With a combination of erratic winds, flashy fuels, and structures threatened, additional resources were immediately requested.

Fire crews placed themselves between the fire and values at risk, saving livestock, homes, vehicles, and outbuildings. By the time the fire was contained, critical resources had responded from multiple agencies, including:

  • A total of 41 fire apparatus from Metro Fire, CalFire, Sacramento Fire, and Pleasant Grove Fire
  • Metro Fire's Dozer
  • Four Air Tankers from CalFire
  • Two Helicopters – one from CalFire and one from the US Forest Service
  • Air Attack from CalFire

Placer County Sheriff, Sacramento Sheriff and Roseville PD assisted with evacuations. Sacramento County OES and the Red Cross responded and assisted with evacuation centers and evacuees, opening centers in both Sacramento County and Placer County. Placer County Animal Rescue responded with horse trailers to assist in rapid evacuation of large animals, if it had been needed. This collaborative effort between agencies worked seamlessly; crews aggressively fought the fire, while protecting homes, residents and animals.

By 4:00 PM, crews had 25% containment of the fire, and had stopped its forward progress. An estimated 430 acres had burned, with one home, 6 vehicles and one tractor destroyed. Arson Investigators on scene determined the fire was caused by arson; one male suspect was arrested and charged with multiple counts of arson.
