Neighbor Alerts Residents to Growing Fire in Attic, Two Dogs Rescued

Fair Oaks, CA – Just before 8pm, Metro Fire crews were dispatched to a home on the 5500 block of Cranbrook Way in Fair Oaks for a report of a garage fire. Crews arrived to heavy smoke coming from the home and quickly initiated fire attack. The fire was determined to be in the attic, with extension into the kitchen.

With no working smoke alarms, the residents had no idea that a fire was building right above their heads, in the attic. A neighbor saw the smoke, alerted the residents and then helped them evacuate. Unfortunately, their two pets were still inside the home. Crews attacked the fire aggressively, while searching and ventilating. During the search, both dogs were rescued and appear to be unharmed. The fire was contained to the attic and kitchen; the rest of the living quarters were saved from the fire.  The cause is currently under investigation, though the fire appears to have started in the attic. Total damage is estimated at $80,000; roughly $120,000 worth of personal property was saved. No injuries were reported, one adult and two children have been displaced.

This home had no working smoke alarms. Had a neighbor not noticed smoke pouring from the house, the fire would have continued to grow, and this story might have had a very tragic ending. Make sure you have working smoke alarms throughout your home!
