Multiple Storage Units Destroyed by Improperly Discarded Smoking Material

North Highlands, CA – Just after 12:30 pm, Metro Fire crews were dispatched to 4950 Watt Avenue for report of a storage unit on fire. Crews arrived to find multiple units heavily involved with fire. Due to the layout of the structure, the fire was spreading quickly, in multiple directions.

Firefighters on five engines, four trucks, and one medic from Metro Fire and Sacramento Fire extinguished the fire, ventilated the structure and protected adjacent units from extension. A total of 7 units were damaged by fire, while the aggressive tactics of crews on scene saved another 20 units, and their contents.

No firefighters or civilians were injured in the fire. Arson Investigators on scene have determined the cause to be improperly discarded smoking material in one of the units.

Nobody was hurt in today’s fire, but possessions were still destroyed. Every year across the country, roughly 1,000 people are killed in fires caused by cigarettes and other smoking material.  Protect yourself, your family and your home: if you smoke, put it out.  All the way, every time.
