Two-Alarm Fire Causes Major Damage to Seven Apartments

Citrus Heights, CA – Shortly after 2 this morning, Metro Fire units responded to the Autumn Ridge Apartment Complex on Shadow Lane. A large column of smoke was visible to crews en route, and additional callers stated that residents were trapped. Arriving units found a two-story building, with thick, black smoke and flames coming from multiple units. The breezeway housing the stairs and front doors was also engulfed in fire, leaving residents no easy way out. With fire spreading quickly and trapped victims, the first arriving Captain immediately requested a second alarm.

Keeping life safety as the priority, crews began searching for victims by climbing in the windows of each apartment, both upstairs and down. One man was assisted out his window; all other residents were out prior to arrival. Two dogs, three cats, one bird and a hamster were rescued. Both dogs were given oxygen after being removed from the smoke, and seemed to recover well.  All other animals appeared to be unharmed.

Firefighting efforts were focused on rescuing victims, fire attack, and containing the fire to the building of origin. Sixty firefighters on nine engines, five trucks, six medics, and one air unit worked to contain the fire. Seven apartments were heavily damaged, while neighboring buildings were spared. Damage is estimated at $1,000,000. Arson investigators were on scene, with the cause still under investigation.

Two residents were transported to local hospitals with injuries; one firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Red Cross was requested to assist the fifteen adults and two children who have been displaced by the fire.

With seven units on fire and residents trapped inside, this fire could easily have been fatal. Smoke alarms do save lives!  Almost 2/3 of home fire deaths are in homes with no working smoke alarms. Protect your family; test your smoke alarms every month, and change the batteries when you change your clocks.
