Dog Perishes, Two Homes Damaged by Fire in Citrus Heights

Sacramento County, CA - Around 5:45 this evening, Metro Fire crews were dispatched to the intersection of Bitterbush Way and Zenith Drive in Citrus Heights for report of a garage fire. First arriving crews reported a fully-involved garage on a home on the 8100 block of Zenith Drive, with extension to the living quarters, and one additional home threatened. Firefighters immediately initiated fire attack and exposure protection, while searching for victims.

Additional fire engines were quickly requested as the fire spread to the eaves and attic of the second home. A total of six fire engines, two trucks, two medics, and two battalion chiefs worked to extinguish the fire in the homes. One dog perished in the fire, a second is still missing; one firefighter sustained minor injuries, no residents were injured. With aggressive firefighting, crews quickly put the fire out in the second home, keeping the damage to approximately 10%. The house of origin sustained major damage.

A resident reported that he and his child were in a back room of the home when he heard popping sounds and thought it might be fireworks. He opened the door between the house and the garage and met a wall of fire. The father quickly scooped-up his daughter and evacuated the home. He later broke a window to search for their dogs, but was unable to find them. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Fire Investigators on scene.

Firefighters wear personal protective equipment that allows them to enter burning buildings. We understand your love for your pets, but when you re-enter a home on fire, you may not be able to make it back out. Please do not put yourself in such danger!
