Metro Fire to Perform Prescribed Burns

Sacramento County, CA - Metro Fire along with fire service partner agency Sacramento Fire Department will be conducting a multipurpose prescribed fire on the 5700 block of Rio Linda Blvd. in an area of Sacramento known as the Carmical Property, on June 9th and 10th.

The ability for Fire personnel to meet the California Incident Command Certification System (CICCS) on a live fire incident during a controlled burn is invaluable. The CICCS is a cooperative effort between the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), and the California State Fire Marshal, in an effort to prepare Firefighting resources for complex and catastrophic emergencies within the State. This type of training is imperative for our personnel to prepare for the upcoming Wildland Season.

Prescriptive burning provides environmental and public safety benefits by reducing wildfire risk through fuel management reduction along property perimeters and roadways. In addition, prescriptive burning accelerates habitat restoration, by reducing highly combustible invasive weeds and accumulated weed seed banks. According to environmental experts, land in the nearby Dry Creek Parkway area, is experiencing a substantial increase in nesting avian habitat compared to prior years after prescribed burning was performed last year. The prescribed burns help with the management of dry fire fuels in an area recognized as having a higher than normal wildland fire activity and will increase public safety by reducing risk of future uncontrolled fires.

These partnering agencies recognize the potential for public concern over wildfire and thus abide by all requirements established by the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD) and the Sacramento Agricultural Commissioner. Metro Fire only burn if the prescribed fire conditions are met, and approval is granted by SMAQMD and the Sacramento Agricultural Commissioner's Office each day. The health and safety of those who live, work, and visit the Sacramento Region are of the utmost importance to Metro Fire and its partner agencies.
