Metro Fire Receives Award for Financial Reporting Excellence

MATHER, CA. – Metro Fire is proud to announce they were awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). The certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government agency and its management.

This award-winning CAFR was for Fiscal Year 2013/14 and was the first time Metro Fire had undertaken this project. In addition to audited financial statements, the CAFR provides an overview of the District, painting an all-encompassing financial picture of the organization. It is not a required report for government agencies, but preparing one is considered best practice. Completing a first-time CAFR is extremely labor intensive, requiring hundreds of staff hours, but the transparency it provides readers is unparalleled.

Ron Empedrad, Controller for Metro Fire, was lead on the project. "The CAFR is one of the highest standards we aim for as CPAs in government practice. Having come from an auditing background, I see it as a vehicle that demonstrates Management's responsible stewardship. The information it provides is not just of value to auditors and management, but to community members, as well."

The CAFR was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards for the program, including demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate Metro Fire’s financial story. It is available to download on our website at:
