Metro Fire Captain Leads Movember Fundraising Campaign

Mather, CA – MOVEMBER is about men growing moustaches during November, sparking conversations regarding men's health and cancer, specifically the high numbers of prostate and testicular cancers, and the critical need for early detection. For our own Captain Bob Bruce, who has battled cancer for the past ten years, this message hits close to home.

Last year, Captain Bruce started a Movember fundraising campaign here at Metro Fire, raising over $7,500 for the cause. This year, he is pushing even more, hoping to bring in the most donations of any fire department in the US or Canada. With his plan in place, Captain Bruce entered Metro Fire into the First Responder Challenge, then called Las Vegas Fire, highest fundraisers in 2014, and let them know he was going for the title. Their response, "Bring it on, Metro!"

The men and women of Metro Fire have donated over $8,000 in the first eight days of this "friendly" competition. The goal is twofold:

  • Raise $25,000 for the Movember Foundation during the month of November
  • Bring awareness to the need for early detection

With 19 of our own diagnosed since 2001, firefighters are clearly not exempt from cancer. The need for early detection is critical to every one of us. All Cancers, All People. Cancer doesn't go away when October ends; our efforts at Metro Fire will not either.
