Outbuilding Fire with Live Lines on the Ground

Sacramento, CA - Just before 5:00 PM, Metro Fire units responded to the Arden-Arcade area for report of fire in a residence on the 2900 block of Glacier Street. Arriving crews found a detached garage well-involved with fire, with arcing power lines on the ground. The uncontrolled electrical current added an additional danger to the crews fighting the fire. Battalion Chief Chris Reed later said, "In a situation like this, there was no question what the priority had to be… keep our firefighters away from the lines. Hold the fire in check, and protect the residence until the power can be shut down."

Firefighters were able to do just that. The home sustained no damage and every firefighter walked away without injury. The cause is undetermined at this point; arson investigators are unable to rule out that the fire was caused by a homeless person. No civilians were injured, though the garage was a complete loss.

Metro Fire reminds residents that if you see a downed power line, assume it is energized and immediately call 9-1-1. Stay a safe distance away and do not touch anything or anyone in contact with the line.
